For the Christmas season this year, our theme is "The truth from above" with our programme introduced by Vaughan-Williams evocative setting of these words. As ever, our programme items both familiar and unfamiliar. Pierre Villete's "Hymne a la Vierge" shows how a contemporary flavour can be given to traditional texts while retaining a traditional feeling. The "African Noel" puts the energy of African folk music into the Christmas story to powerful effect.

The music for our 2011 season illustrates the theme “The Way of the Lord”. It covers a wide spectrum of choral music from the 16th to the 21st century. In celebration of the quatercentenary of the King James Bible, Byrd and Purcell are well represented. We hope to perform some of this music with a viol consort, which should make the teen-age Purcell's amazingly adventurous setting of “My beloved spake” from The Song of Solomon particularly memorable.
God is gone up (Finzi)
Faire is the heaven (Harris)
God so loved the world (Chilcott)
Nunc Dimittis in G (Howells)
And I saw a new heaven (Bainton)
Turn our captivity O Lord (Byrd)
Teach me O Lord the way of thy statutes (Byrd)
Tantum ergo sacramentum (Durufle)
Beati quorum via (Stanford)
Give us the wings of faith (Bullock)
Ride the chariot (spiritual arranged by Alyn Davies)
Praise our Lord, all ye gentiles (Byrd)
Rejoice in the Lord alway (Anon.)
Rise up my love (Healey Willan)
Laudate dominum (Mozart)
Ubi caritas et amor (Durufle)
Magnificat in C (Kelly)
Let the people praise thee O God (Mathias)
Thou knowest Lord the secrets of our hearts (Purcell)
This is the day (Anon.)
My beloved spake (Purcell)
Our Christmas repertoire is built round the theme "Born on a Christmas Day". It is mainly a capella, combining well known and loved items such as Pearsall's 8-part setting of "In dulci jubilo" and David Willcocks' arrangement of "Stille Nacht" with less well known but equally delightful items such as Howells' "Here is the little door" and Poulenc's "Hodie Christus Natus est".
Although the programme is demanding for the singers, it should be easy on the ear for the audience. Do come along to enjoy it.
